Project management and ISO — an integrative approach through process management. Reprints and Permissions. Project Management in Quality has become the topic of various recent publications as the methodology was found to be an effective and efficient way to implement a quality management system per ISO or other quality related standards.

The Issue As a result of a worldwide corporate mandate, customer requirements and an internal quest for improved operations, DE management decided to embark on the ISO journey.

The approach taken can be summarized as follows: 1. Identify the business processes that constitute DE's operations. Establish and develop core activities first, i. Extend the effort to the other activities as they relate to project management. Ensure compliance with ISO Hope for the best! Quality ISO defines the requirements for a Quality Management System QMS that demonstrates the ability of an organization to consistently meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements, as well as to enhance customer satisfaction.

Under cost estimating, the Standard points out, amongst many other things, that costs should be clearly identified and that account should be made of trends within the economic environment.

Here again I believe that the Standard goes beyond what would be expected from quality guidelines, but, in this case, does not really provide sufficient information on how to undertake the process. Though here it does at least mention techniques such as earned value analysis, I still feel that is only telling part of the story. The final chapter in the Standard brings us back to the more traditional quality management activities of measurement, analysis and improvement.

It is perhaps worth starting with a quick reminder of the definitions of a project and a product. A project is a process, or series of processes, to achieve one or more objectives. The product is the result of the project process and can be tangible, e.

In this chapter, the Standard covers the ground not only of the measurement of the product and the customer's satisfaction with it, but how the project achieved its delivery.

It is here where I think the Standard can be of significant benefit to both the originating or procuring and project or delivery organizations, or to the divisions within a single organization for internal projects. Team members and other interested parties may be left by the wayside, or, even worse, run over, as the project train progresses rapidly to its goals. Though clearly the information included in the Standard does provide much of the basis for these activities the fact that they are not even mentioned in passing, and are not regarded as distinct elements of the project processes, I find a little remiss.

To summarize, the Standard covers a large amount of the project processes, probably rather more than would be expected just from the title. I also believe that any organization that undertakes projects and has an ISO quality management system should ensure that the Standard is incorporated into these. With different revision and review cycles it must also be expected that both documents can only reflect the state of project management at the time of their own publication.

What if your organization fails the audit? First, not every nonconformity is a failing offensive. Auditors can still provide a certificate while requiring that the errors be corrected within 30 days. Other infractions are more problematic. Not being in compliance with direct ISO requirements, for example, is a cause for rejection. Some nonconformities may take months to amend, such as calibrating all gauges. Particularly in its most recent revision, ISO is generic to accommodate all types of endeavors and businesses.

Organizations are certified only in because it is the only standard with requirements. See how Smartsheet can help you be more effective. Potential acceptance into a global supply chain. Here are some of the misgivings voiced by users: The standards themselves are written in jargon. The standards were based on a military model, and some jargon remains.

However, the most recent revision leans farther towards plain language. If you certify, your organization will end up buried in procedures and documentation. Again, the original model focused on procedures and documentation, and some organizations were certified on paperwork alone.

The version does not specify that documentation is essential and is more interested in what people do than what they write down. It takes a long time to certify. Even for small companies, certification can take at least six months. Certification is expensive.
